Should you choose Spreeflo or Mandrill?

Mandrill makes sense in one situation: you already run Mailchimp and want transactional email on the same vendor, sharing templates and contact data. Its analytics and A/B testing on transactional messages are better than most infrastructure providers bother with, and at very high volume the block pricing becomes competitive.

The catch is that it cannot be bought alone. Mandrill requires a paid Mailchimp Standard plan underneath it, so the real floor is roughly $40/mo — about $20 for Standard plus $20 for the first block of 25,000 emails — before you have sent a marketing campaign. Content retention is 30 days, a dedicated IP is $29.95/mo, and the product has seen little investment for years.

Spreeflo includes both jobs in one $16 plan: transactional email and marketing email on the same contact record, the same sending reputation and the same analytics, with the journey builder, unlimited nested segmentation and A/B testing included. Against Mandrill the comparison is really about the double bill — you are paying two products to do what one plan covers.

What Spreeflo is

Spreeflo is an AI-powered marketing automation platform for founders and small teams — email, browser push notifications, forms and web analytics on one contact record, from $16/mo ($13 billed annually). Its AI writes per-recipient personalization at send time, an in-app AI assistant builds automations from plain language, and a hosted MCP server lets Claude, Claude Code or Cursor operate the whole workspace — while sends, publishes and deletes always require a person.

Founder-led businesses, one workspace. Sends, publishes and deletes always require a person — including when an AI agent is doing the building.

What Mandrill (Mailchimp Transactional) is

Mandrill is Mailchimp’s transactional email service, sending API-triggered messages with templates shared from the Mailchimp account, per-message analytics and A/B testing on transactional content. It is sold as blocks of 25,000 emails at $20 each and requires an active paid Mailchimp Standard plan, so it cannot be bought on its own.

Launched 2012. Converted from a standalone product to a Mailchimp add-on in 2016. Owned by Intuit since 2021.

Where Spreeflo and Mandrill differ

The two tools are built around different assumptions, so some of what Mandrill covers has no Spreeflo equivalent. Here is exactly what that is, who it actually matters for, and what Spreeflo does in its place.

Block pricing at very high volume

Above roughly four million messages the per-email cost becomes competitive with dedicated infrastructure. Spreeflo prices on marketing contacts and does not compete at that volume.

Shared templates and data with Mailchimp

Transactional messages reuse the templates and contact data already in your Mailchimp account. Spreeflo achieves the same continuity differently, by having both message types on one contact record inside one product.

Analytics and A/B testing on transactional mail

More reporting than most transactional providers offer. Spreeflo reports on transactional sending too, though without dedicated transactional A/B tooling.

Where Spreeflo comes out ahead of Mandrill

22 of 26 scored rows go Spreeflo’s way — for these reasons:

The structural problem is the double bill. Mandrill cannot be purchased on its own — it requires an active paid Mailchimp Standard plan — so the effective floor is roughly $40/mo across two products before any marketing has been sent, and the attached Mailchimp plan bills unsubscribed and archived contacts on top. Mandrill itself has no campaigns, no automation, no segmentation, no forms and no browser push, because those live in Mailchimp rather than here. Spreeflo covers both jobs in one $16 plan on one contact record and one sending reputation, with the journey builder and unlimited nested segmentation included.

Spreeflo is a marketing automation platform rather than a CRM, a page builder or an SMS gateway. The comparison above marks every row where that shows — nothing is hidden in a footnote.
